Exploring downtown Portland: Food trucks, Powell’s & more

img_2722-1If you’ve been to Portland but haven’t taken a bite out of the downtown food truck scene, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice.

My siblings and I knew we couldn’t come to Portland without exploring downtown a bit. Our first stop/mission was to find food (not hard) and decided on the Alder St. Food cart pod (Portland’s food carts are organized into sections called “pods“). And it was definitely a good decision, because there’s pretty much something for everyone there. We each had a bubble tea, I had the best grilled cheese of my life from The Grilled Cheese Grill (get the Kelsey — Tillamook cheddar and basil pesto — you won’t regret it), my brother got some gyro from a Greek truck and my sister went for a Korean bento bowl.

Next we made our way to Powell’s, where we got lost looking at probably every book on the planet.

Then we hit up NW 23rd Ave. to satisfy our sweet tooth.

And everyone says it because it’s true…Salt & Straw is a must while in Portland. A MUST. Some of their stranger flavors (Honey Lavendar or Pear and Blue Cheese) might make you skeptical but once you taste them you’ll probably wonder where they’ve been your whole life.

23rd Ave. is the cutest part of Portland and has a very different, more easy going feel than the heart of downtown does.

My wildest dream even came true and I got to meet the cutest old English bulldog named Charlie. I totally would have stolen him and taken him home with me if I had room in my car/it wasn’t illegal.
